Pre-Reading Questions
for Erik & Isabelle
1) Describe what high school life is (or was) like for you. What are your favorite
memories? What memories would you rather not preserve and why?
2) In what ways is sexuality expressed in a typical high school? What are the
unwritten codes about teenage sexualitywhats acceptable and whats
not? What happens when people break these codes?
3) What roles do adults play in your life? Think of an adult who is a great role
model for you. What is it about him/her inspires you?
4) What are your personal goals for your adult future? What are you doing now
to reach those goals? Are there any roadblocks in your way of achieving your goals?
If so, what are they?
5) What is culture? Define it as best you can, and explain what culture or cultures
you connect with and why. Is there such thing as a Gay/Lesbian/Bisexual/ Transgendered
culture? What attributes does it have? How does the mainstream population interpret
GLBT culture?
6. What do friends of the opposite gender have to offer each other? List the pros
and cons of having a best friend of the opposite sex.
7. Describe your relationship with your parents. Are you open with them? Are they
open with you? What barriers to communication do you find in your relationship?
How might these barriers be overcome?
8. Have you ever fallen in love with someone that you didnt expect to find
attractive? What are you looking for in a relationship? How might teenage relationships
be more challenging for gay and lesbian young adults?
9. Many teenagers have mood swings that range from manic to depressive. How do
you handle your own mood swings? Are your approaches constructive or destructive
(e.g. writing poetry versus drinking alcohol)? What have you noticed about how
your friends handle their emotions?
10. If there was one thing you could change about the school system related to
GLBT issues, what would it be? How might it be possible to create a safer place
for young people in school?
